How to make a social media marketing strategy for a small business

Most small businesses post when they have time and stop when they get busy. A strategy changes that: it says where your customers are, what you post about, how often, and how you will know it brings in business. You do not need to be everywhere. You need to be where your customers already spend their time, and to show up there every week.

Start from where you stand

Before you plan new posts, look at what you have. How often do you post now? Are you on the platforms your customers use? And when someone taps the link in your profile, where do they land? A post can only bring a customer if it leads somewhere: a website with your prices, your work and a one-tap way to message you.

Choose two or three platforms

  • Facebook. Still where many families, parents and local groups look for businesses near them.
  • Instagram. For anything people buy with their eyes: food, fashion, beauty, homes, events.
  • TikTok. Short videos that show how you work, for younger customers.
  • WhatsApp. Where many customers ask questions and order, so put a chat button everywhere.
  • LinkedIn. For businesses that sell to other businesses.
  • YouTube. For longer how-to videos that people search for.

Doing two platforms well beats doing five badly. Fix your profile on each one first: a clear name and picture, a bio that says what you do and where, a contact button and a link to your website.

Post about a few themes

Content pillars are the three to five themes you post about again and again: your work, the people behind it, answers to common questions, your customers' stories and your offers. They stop you from staring at an empty screen, and they help people remember what you do. Keep offers to one post in five.

Plan four weeks at a time

Three posts a week, planned a month ahead, is a rhythm most owners can keep. Write the captions in one sitting, end each one with what to do next (message us, call, visit, order) and use a few hashtags about your place and what you sell.

Measure what matters

Likes are nice, but messages, calls, visits and orders pay the bills. Count them every week, and ask each new customer where they found you. Adding the Meta pixel to your website shows which posts and adverts bring visitors.

Where your website fits

Posts disappear from feeds within a day; your website stays. It is where every post sends people, where your prices and work live, and where Google finds you too. On AI Web Maker, building and previewing your website costs nothing, and you go live for $119 a year of hosting, with every tool built in, including a tool that posts to your social media on a schedule. Questions

Social media strategy: questions and answers

Is the AI Social Media Marketing Strategy Maker free?

Yes. Make up to 5 strategies a day from one connection, with no sign-up. Building and previewing your website costs nothing too. Going live costs $119 a year of hosting; a domain is registered and paid for separately.

Do you log in to my social media pages?

No. Facebook, Instagram and TikTok do not let outside tools read pages without logging in, and we never ask for your passwords. We use what you tell us (where you post, how often, your follower numbers) and we check your website, the place your posts send people.

How is the score worked out?

From fixed rules, the same for everyone: how often you post, whether you are on the platforms where your customers are, and whether your website links to your pages, has a one-tap chat link, shows a picture when shared and measures visitors. Each finding shows its points.

Why do I get the full strategy by email?

The page shows your score, what to fix first, your platforms and your first week of posts at once. The full strategy, with the 4-week calendar, captions and hashtags, arrives in your inbox and opens here too, so you can keep it and download it as a PDF.

I have no advert budget. Does it still work?

Yes. Choose "Your time, no money" and the strategy uses free posting only, with the hours a week it takes instead of an advert budget.

Can I get the strategy in French, Spanish or Portuguese?

Yes. Open this page in your language (the language menu is at the top), and your strategy and captions are written in that language.

Why does a social media strategy need a website?

Posts disappear from feeds within a day. A website keeps your prices, your work and a way to order or message you in one place, so every post has somewhere to send people, and Google finds you too.

Social media strategy samples by industry
