Server response time checker (TTFB test)

Type a page address. The checker loads it three times and measures how quickly the server starts answering (time to first byte), the full load of the page's HTML, its size and compression.

What time to first byte means

When a browser asks for a page, the server has to build it and start sending it back. Time to first byte (TTFB) is how long that takes: from the request to the first piece of the answer. Everything else a visitor sees (text, images, the layout) waits for it, so a slow server makes every page slow, however well the rest is built.

How to read the result

  • Under 0.2 seconds: excellent. The page is probably cached or very light.
  • Up to 0.8 seconds: good. This is Google's own line for a good server response.
  • 0.8 to 1.8 seconds: needs improvement. Visitors on phones start to notice.
  • Over 1.8 seconds: poor. Visitors leave before the page appears, and Google's page experience signals suffer.

The tester loads the page three times and reports the middle result, because the first visit can be slower while the server warms its caches. It also shows the full time to download the HTML, its size, and whether it is compressed.

How to make a server answer faster

  1. Cache whole pages, so the server sends a ready copy instead of building the page for every visitor. Most website platforms have a caching setting or plugin.
  2. Turn on compression (gzip or brotli). It usually cuts the size of the HTML by 70% or more.
  3. Remove heavy plugins and slow database queries that run on every page.
  4. Use better hosting, or a content delivery network (CDN) that serves pages from near each visitor.
  5. Avoid redirects on the way in: each one is a round trip before the page even starts.

Trace those redirects with the redirect checker. The AI Website SEO Checker includes server speed in its check of the whole website.

Questions

Server Response Time Checker: questions and answers

What is a good server response time?

Google treats a time to first byte of 0.8 seconds or less as good and over 1.8 seconds as poor. Under 0.2 seconds is excellent.

What slows a server down?

Slow hosting, pages built from scratch on every visit (no caching), heavy plugins or database queries, and a server far from the visitor.

Is this the same as page speed?

It is the first part of it. Images, scripts and fonts load after the HTML, so a fast server is needed but not enough for a fast page.

Why are the three measurements different?

The first visit can be slower while caches warm up; later visits show the speed most visitors get. The tester reports the middle one.
