What structured data is

Structured data (often called schema markup) describes a page in a vocabulary machines read directly, from schema.org. Instead of guessing from the words on the page, a search engine reads that this is a Bakery, open 7am to 6pm, at this address, with this phone number and these reviews. The usual format is JSON-LD: a block of data in the page that visitors never see.

What it unlocks

  • Richer results: star ratings, prices and stock for products, breadcrumbs, event dates, recipe times.
  • A clearer picture of the business for Google's knowledge panel and map results.
  • Better answers in AI assistants, which lean on structured facts when they describe or recommend a business.

What this checker reports

It reads every JSON-LD block on the page, flags any block that is not valid JSON (search engines ignore a broken block completely), and lists each item it describes. For the common types it shows which recommended properties are present and which are missing:

  • LocalBusiness and its kinds (Restaurant, Dentist, Plumber...): name, address, telephone, opening hours, geo coordinates, image.
  • Organization: name, url, logo, and sameAs links to your social profiles.
  • Product: name, image, description, offers with price, currency and availability, and reviews.
  • Article and BlogPosting: headline, image, date published, author.
  • FAQPage and BreadcrumbList, Event, Recipe, Service and more.

It also counts microdata and RDFa, the older ways of adding the same information. Once the markup reads cleanly here, Google's Rich Results Test confirms which rich results the page qualifies for. The AI Website SEO Checker checks for business details in structured data across your site; for sharing previews, use the Open Graph checker.

Questions

Schema Markup Checker: questions and answers

What is schema markup?

Structured data in the vocabulary of schema.org that describes a page in a form machines read directly: the business, its address and hours, a product and its price, an article and its author.

Does schema markup improve rankings?

Not directly. It makes a page eligible for richer results (stars, prices, breadcrumbs) and helps search engines and AI assistants understand the business, which helps clicks and visibility.

Which format should I use?

JSON-LD, a script block in the page. Google recommends it, and it keeps the data separate from the design.

Is this the same as Google's Rich Results Test?

This checker shows what the markup says and what is missing for each type. Google's own test then confirms which rich results a page qualifies for.
