How Google builds a search result

Every result on Google's first page has three parts: the site name and address at the top, a blue title, and two or three lines of text underneath. The title usually comes from the page's title tag, and the text from its meta description. Both are cut when they run too wide, which is why a title that looks fine in your editor can end with three dots in the results.

Google cuts by width in pixels, not by a count of letters. On a computer a title gets about 580 pixels at 20 pixels high; on a phone the title can wrap onto a second line. A description gets about 920 pixels on a computer. This preview measures your text with the same font sizes, so you see where the cut falls before you publish.

Writing a title people click

  • Put the main phrase first. "Custom cakes in Nairobi | Sunny Bakery" survives a cut; "Welcome to the home of Sunny Bakery, where we bake custom cakes" does not.
  • One page, one title. Two pages with the same title compete with each other, and Google struggles to pick one.
  • Add your brand at the end, after a separator, when there is room.
  • Aim for 50 to 60 characters as a guide, and check the pixel width here.

Writing a description that earns the visit

The description does not move rankings by itself, but it is your sales line on the results page. Say what the page offers and why it is the right choice: a price, a place, a guarantee, how fast. Keep it between 120 and 155 characters, and write a different one for every page.

When a page has no description, or one that does not match the search, Google writes its own from the page text. A clear description that answers the search is used far more often.

Check the rest of the page

A good snippet brings the click; the page has to keep the visitor. The AI Website SEO Checker checks titles and descriptions across your whole site at once, finds repeats, and suggests the keyword each main page should aim for. For the headings on one page, try the heading checker.

Questions

SERP Preview Tool: questions and answers

How long should a title tag be?

Google cuts titles by width, not by characters: about 580 pixels on a computer, which is roughly 50 to 60 characters. Keep the words that matter most at the start, so they survive even when the end is cut.

How long should a meta description be?

Aim for 120 to 155 characters, about 920 pixels on a computer. On phones Google shows a little more text across more lines, but a description written for the computer view works on both.

Does Google always show my meta description?

No. Google rewrites the snippet when it thinks another part of the page answers the search better. A clear description that matches what the page is about is used far more often.

Why does the tool measure pixels?

Letters differ in width: a title full of W and M is cut sooner than one full of i and l. Pixels are what Google actually uses to decide where to cut.
