Your First Visit at Steady Stride
Starting physical therapy can feel unfamiliar. This page walks you through what to expect, how to prepare, and what happens at each step, so you arrive knowing what comes next.

What happens at a typical first appointment
Your first appointment is about understanding you. It usually follows three stages: a conversation, an assessment, and a plan.
- 1. The conversation: your therapist asks about your symptoms, health history, goals, and what matters most to you day to day.
- 2. The assessment: a hands-on and movement-based look at how your body moves, where you feel discomfort, and what is limiting you.
- 3. The plan: your therapist explains what they found in plain language, outlines a suggested course of care, and agrees on next steps with you.

What to wear
Comfortable clothing that lets you move freely
Shorts or loose trousers for lower-body assessments
A fitted top or sports bra for upper-body assessments
Supportive, closed-toe shoes or sneakers
What to bring
A list of your current symptoms and when they started
Any relevant medical records, imaging results, or referral letters
A list of medications you are currently taking
Your questions and any goals you hope to reach
You are in good hands
Your therapist will listen first. They will explain each step before they take it, and you are welcome to ask questions at any point. There is no expectation that you already know the terms or the process.
You remain in control of the conversation. If something feels uncomfortable, say so, and your therapist will adjust. Your first visit is a shared start, not a test.
