To measure AI search visibility means tracking how often AI engines show and cite your pages, how many visits their answers send you, and how ready each page is to be quoted. Four sources cover it: Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools for citations, Google Analytics 4 for visits, and a monthly panel of customer questions for everything else.

This article is part of our complete guide: AI Search Optimization.

What does it mean to measure AI search visibility?

Measuring AI search visibility means answering three separate questions: are you shown or cited, do those answers send visits, and are your pages ready to be quoted.

Each question needs a different source, and no single tool answers all three. Citations are recorded inside the engines, so only an engine's own report can count them, and so far Google and Microsoft are the ones that publish such reports to website owners. Visits are recorded by your analytics, which sees a person arriving but not the answer they read first. Readiness can be checked from your own pages, because it depends on things you control: whether bots can reach the page, whether it answers a question and whether it backs the answer with facts.

Read the table from top to bottom as a chain rather than a menu. The engines' reports and your analytics tell you what happened, the question panel tells you why a competitor was chosen instead, and the logs and the score tell you what to fix first. A business that tracks only visits will miss the citations that put its name in answers without a click, and one that tracks only a score will never know whether its fixes worked.

How does Search Console show your pages in AI Overviews and AI Mode?

Search Console's Generative AI performance report counts how often links to your website were shown in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google says it rolled out to all websites worldwide on 31 August 2026.

Search Console Help defines an impression in this report as one showing of a link to your website in a generative AI feature on Google Search. You can group the data by page, country, date and device, and filter between text searches typed into the search bar and multimodal searches such as Google Lens and Circle to Search. Pages are grouped by the final address linked after any redirects, and experiments in Search Labs are left out.

Three limits matter when you read it. A website with too few impressions in AI features may see no report at all, the newest days can be preliminary and change within hours, and tables stop at 1,000 rows as in the rest of Search Console. The same data also sits inside the Web search type of the ordinary Performance report, as Google's documentation on AI features explains, so a rise there may partly come from AI Overviews and AI Mode.

Before trusting an empty report, check the Search generative AI control under Settings. Search Console Help says a website set to exclude receives no impressions or traffic from these features, and that a change to the control usually takes a few days to apply. If the control is set to include and the report stays empty for months, the cause is reach or content, and the measures below will show which.

What does Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report count?

Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report counts how often your pages are cited as sources in Microsoft Copilot, Bing's AI summaries and select partner integrations. Bing introduced it as a public preview on 10 February 2026.

Its headline figure, Total Citations, is the number of times your pages were shown as sources in AI answers during the dates you choose. Average Cited Pages is the average number of your pages shown as sources each day, and Bing states that it does not indicate ranking or authority. The report also lists grounding queries, the phrases its AI used when it retrieved your content, which Bing describes as a sample, along with citation counts for each page and a timeline.

Bing's announcement does not mention clicks or traffic, so the report tells you about presence rather than visits. Even so, it is the most direct count of citations any engine offers, and verifying your website in Bing Webmaster Tools is worth it for that alone. Read the grounding queries closely, because they show the wording an engine used to find you, which is often closer to how customers describe a problem than the keywords in older SEO reports.

How do you see AI referral visits in Google Analytics 4?

Google Analytics 4 now sorts visits from AI assistants into an AI Assistant channel in its Default Channel Group. Google Analytics Help dates the change to 13 May 2026.

Visits whose referrer matches a recognised assistant get the medium ai-assistant and the campaign name (ai-assistant), and Google names ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude as examples. Clicks from Google's own AI Overviews and AI Mode are not in that channel, because Google Analytics counts them as Organic Search. So the AI Assistant channel measures the chat assistants, while Google's AI features stay inside your search traffic and are measured through Search Console.

Treat every AI figure in analytics as a minimum. A visit only reaches the AI Assistant channel if the browser or app passes on where it came from, and GA4 files a visit with no source information under Direct. ChatGPT's utm_source tag keeps its visits identifiable even when the referrer is lost, but other apps may not label theirs, so watch the trend over months and what these visitors do, such as enquiries and orders, rather than the exact count.

Two narrower questions follow from this one, each with its own page. The first is AI referral traffic in GA4: where the AI Assistant channel appears, how to build a custom channel group with a regular expression, and how to check whether visits are being missed. The second is the AI Citation Score: what each of its five areas checks, how the caps work and how the website score is put together.

How do you test which websites the engines cite?

Ask each engine the questions your customers ask, every month, and record which websites it cites. It is the only measure that shows competitors' citations and covers engines with no owner reports.

Choose 10 to 20 questions that lead to a sale, from price and process questions to "best near me" questions, written the way a customer would say them. A hypothetical plumber in Nairobi might use "how much does it cost to unblock a drain in Kilimani" and "best emergency plumber in Westlands". Ask each one in ChatGPT with search on, Perplexity, Claude, Google and Copilot, in a new chat, and keep the wording identical each month.

ColumnWhat to recordWhy it matters

Answers change from one ask to the next, so a single reply proves little. Count the share of questions where you are cited for each engine, and read it over three or more months before deciding a change worked. Signing in, location and device can all shift an answer, so ask from the same setting each time and note anything unusual.

The column of other cited websites is often the most useful. If a directory or local guide is cited for most of your questions, getting listed there may do more than rewriting your own page. If a competitor's page is cited, open it and compare its first paragraph with yours; owners who do this often find the gap is a clearer answer or a more specific fact.

Can server logs show which AI bots read your pages?

Server logs show every visit by an AI bot, with its user agent, the page it asked for and the response it got. They prove access, not citations.

Each engine's bot names itself in the user agent string. OpenAI's crawler documentation lists OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot, ChatGPT-User and OAI-AdsBot and publishes a JSON file of IP addresses for each, and Perplexity does the same for PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User. Anthropic does not publish IP ranges for ClaudeBot, Claude-SearchBot or Claude-User and advises against blocking by IP address, so for Claude rely on the user agent and robots.txt.

Sort the visits by kind before reading anything into them. Search bots such as OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot and PerplexityBot build the indexes that answers draw on, training bots such as GPTBot and ClaudeBot collect material for future models, and user fetchers such as ChatGPT-User, Claude-User and Perplexity-User arrive for actions a person starts inside the assistant. An important page that no search bot ever requests cannot be cited, so look for those gaps first. Check the response codes too, because a 403 error or a challenge page sent to a bot means a firewall is turning it away even when robots.txt allows it.

How do you score how quotable your pages are?

A quotability score predicts how easy a page is for an AI engine to reach, understand and quote. It tells you what to fix, while the reports above tell you whether the fixes worked.

The AI Citation Score from AI Web Maker rates each page out of 100 in five areas: can AI reach it (25 points), is there an answer to lift (30), evidence (20), entity and trust (15) and says something specific (10). Three problems cap it whatever else the page does well: a page the engines cannot reach scores at most 10, a noindex page at most 15 and a page under 80 words at most 30. It predicts how quotable a page is and does not measure whether engines quote it today, which is why it sits beside the engines' reports rather than replacing them.

You can scan your website with the AI Search Visibility Checker to get the score for each page, the question each page can win and the passage an AI engine would quote. It checks robots.txt for each engine's search bot and asks for your homepage as each bot, which catches firewalls that your logs might only hint at. Five pages are read with no account, and up to 50 with an account for 1 credit, about $0.65; the checker changes nothing on the website, and the method page explains every check.

Which measures should a business track each month?

Track five figures each month: Google AI impressions, Bing citations, AI Assistant visits, your panel's citation share and your page scores. Keep them in one sheet so the trend is visible.

MeasureWhere to find itWhat a change tells you
Google AI impressionsSearch Console, Generative AI performance reportWhether Google shows your links in AI Overviews and AI Mode
Bing citationsBing Webmaster Tools, AI Performance reportWhether Copilot and Bing cite your pages more or less often

Panel citation shareYour question panel logWhether you or competitors win your customers' questions
Page scores and AI Visibility ScoreAI Search Visibility CheckerWhether the pages you rewrote became more quotable

Take the first reading before you change anything, because without a baseline no later number means much. Then change one group of pages at a time, so that a rise in citations can be tied to a particular fix. Expect the measures to move at different speeds: OpenAI says robots.txt changes reach its search systems in about 24 hours and Perplexity says up to 24 hours, while rewritten pages must wait to be crawled again before any report can reflect them.

Questions business owners ask about measuring AI visibility

Can I see exactly where my business ranks inside ChatGPT?

No. OpenAI offers no citation report for website owners, so any position figure for ChatGPT comes from someone asking it questions. Google says no third-party tool has access to its internal ranking or AI systems, and the same caution applies to other engines. Your own question panel and AI Assistant visits in GA4 are the closest honest measures.

Why does Search Console show no Generative AI performance report for my website?

Usually because the website has had too few impressions in AI features, which Search Console Help gives as the common reason. Check that the Search generative AI control is set to include. Then use your question panel and the checker to see whether reach or content is holding the website back.

Do clicks from AI Overviews appear in the AI Assistant channel?

No. Google Analytics counts clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode as Organic Search, and the AI Assistant channel covers chat assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude. Use Search Console's Generative AI performance report for Google's AI features.

How often should I check AI search visibility?

Once a month suits most businesses, because answers vary from day to day and the reports need time to fill. Check access sooner after any change to robots.txt, a firewall or your hosting.

Does a high AI Citation Score mean engines cite me?

No. The score predicts how quotable a page is and does not measure whether engines quote it today. Pair it with the Google and Bing reports and your question panel to see real citations.

Your first month of measuring AI search visibility

Spend week one setting up the reports, week two taking the baseline, and weeks three and four fixing what the measures point to.

In week one, verify the website in Bing Webmaster Tools, open the Generative AI performance report in Search Console and confirm that GA4 shows an AI Assistant channel in its Traffic acquisition report. In week two, write down the five figures from the monthly table, run your question panel across the five engines and scan your pages for their scores. In weeks three and four, fix anything that stops bots reaching you first, then rewrite the openings of the pages your customers' questions point to.

At the start of the second month, take the same five readings and compare them with the baseline. Small numbers move unevenly, so look for a direction across several measures rather than a jump in one. Keep the sheet going, because the businesses that can show a year of readings are the ones that know which changes earned them citations.
