How to Get Cited by ChatGPT in 2026: A Step-by-Step Guide
The full path to being cited in ChatGPT answers: open the door to OAI-SearchBot, be findable in the searches ChatGPT runs, write pages that answer first and check the results every month.
- 5 AI engines checked
- A score for every page
- The passage an AI would quote
How to get cited by ChatGPT is mostly a matter of access, findability and clarity: OAI-SearchBot must be allowed to reach your pages, those pages must turn up in the searches ChatGPT runs, and each one must answer a customer's question first, with evidence. Your business also needs to be named consistently on other websites.
This article is part of our complete guide: AI Search Optimization.
- OpenAI documents 4 crawlers, and only OAI-SearchBot decides whether a website can appear in ChatGPT search answers; GPTBot covers model training (OpenAI's crawler documentation).
- A website must meet 2 conditions to be eligible: robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot, and the host or CDN accepts traffic from OpenAI's published search bot IP addresses (OpenAI Help Center on searching the web with ChatGPT).
- OpenAI says a robots.txt change can take about 24 hours to affect its search results, so an access fix shows quickly.
- ChatGPT search has been open to everyone in regions where ChatGPT is available, with no sign-up, since 5 February 2025 (OpenAI's announcement of ChatGPT search).
What does ChatGPT need before it can cite your website?
ChatGPT needs OAI-SearchBot, OpenAI's search crawler, to be allowed in robots.txt and to receive your pages without being blocked. Nothing else on this page matters until that is true.
OpenAI runs four bots, and each reads its own line in robots.txt. OAI-SearchBot surfaces websites in ChatGPT's search features, GPTBot collects content that may be used to train OpenAI's models, ChatGPT-User fetches pages when a person asks ChatGPT to do something, and OAI-AdsBot checks landing pages submitted as ChatGPT ads. OpenAI states that sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as navigational links, and it recommends allowing the bot and its published IP ranges.
| Bot | What OpenAI uses it for | What blocking it in robots.txt does |
|---|---|---|
| OAI-SearchBot | Surfacing websites in ChatGPT search | Removes your pages from ChatGPT search answers |
| GPTBot | Collecting content that may train OpenAI's models | Signals your content should not be used for training; search is unaffected |
| ChatGPT-User | Fetching a page a person asked ChatGPT to visit | Robots.txt rules may not apply, and it does not decide search inclusion |
| OAI-AdsBot | Checking landing pages submitted as ads | Only relevant if you advertise in ChatGPT |
There is a second condition that robots.txt cannot show. OpenAI's help page on search says the host or CDN must also allow traffic from its published search bot IP addresses, which it lists in a JSON file for exactly this purpose. A firewall rule, a "block AI bots" switch in a CDN or a security plugin that challenges unknown visitors can turn OAI-SearchBot away while robots.txt welcomes it, and the website keeps working normally for every human visitor.
One detail surprises owners who block the bot on purpose. OpenAI's publisher FAQ says that when OAI-SearchBot cannot read a page, ChatGPT may still show the link and page title if it finds the address elsewhere, and the way to prevent that is a noindex meta tag on a page the crawler is allowed to fetch. A bot that is turned away never sees the tag, so blocking the crawl and relying on noindex do not work together.
How do you check that OAI-SearchBot can reach your pages?
Check robots.txt for an OAI-SearchBot rule, then request your homepage as OAI-SearchBot and confirm a normal page comes back. Both checks matter, because each catches a different kind of block.
Start with the file itself, at your domain followed by /robots.txt. Look for a group headed User-agent: OAI-SearchBot and for a catch-all group headed User-agent: *, since a bot with no group of its own follows the catch-all. A line reading Disallow: / under either heading refuses the whole website, and older templates and staging settings sometimes leave exactly that behind after launch.
The server is the next place to look. Your hosting control panel, CDN dashboard or security plugin may have a setting for AI crawlers or bot fighting, and any of them can answer OAI-SearchBot with an error or a challenge page. Server logs help too: OpenAI gives OAI-SearchBot/1.4 as an example of the bot's user agent string, so a log line with that name and a 403 status shows a refusal, while a 200 status shows the page was served.
The quickest way to run both checks together is to scan your website with the AI Search Visibility Checker. It reads robots.txt for the search bots of ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Google AI and Copilot, asks for your homepage as each bot to catch firewalls that turn them away, and lists training bots such as GPTBot apart from the search bots. It changes nothing on your website, so run it before and after a fix.
How does ChatGPT find the pages it cites?
ChatGPT finds pages by searching: it rewrites the user's question into one or more targeted queries and sends them to partner search providers. Pages that never appear in those searches are rarely read.
OpenAI's help page on searching the web describes the process plainly. ChatGPT may search on its own when a question would benefit from current information, or the user can switch search on, and it then turns the question into targeted queries, sometimes running more specific ones after reading the first results. For local questions it may add a general location inferred from the user's IP address, so "a good bakery near me" can become a search for bakeries in Leeds.
That has two practical consequences for a business. First, ordinary search visibility still matters, because a page has to be found before it can be read and cited; OpenAI does not name its search partners on that page, though it links Microsoft's privacy statement among those describing how providers may process queries, which is one reason owners make sure Bing has indexed their website too. Second, pages should use the words customers use, including the town or area, since a rewritten query such as "emergency plumber Westlands Nairobi" matches a page that says those words in plain text.
The detail of how candidate pages are then ranked and quoted belongs to two narrower questions under this guide. How ChatGPT chooses sources covers what OpenAI documents about ranking, citations and the Sources panel, and where owners are guessing. ChatGPT search vs training data explains the difference between an answer written from a live search, which can cite you, and one written from what the model learned months earlier, which cannot link to anyone.
What kind of page does ChatGPT quote?
ChatGPT quotes pages that answer one clear question in their opening lines and back the answer with specific, checkable facts. A vague page gives it nothing to lift.
When ChatGPT searches, it reads several candidate pages and writes one reply, citing the pages it used. A passage that names its subject and states the answer in its first sentence can be placed into that reply almost as written. A page that opens with a welcome message or three paragraphs of background forces the model to dig, and a competitor's clearer page is easier to use.
The practical unit is one page per real customer question. Write the question as a heading, answer it in 40 to 60 words straight underneath, then give the conditions, steps, prices you set yourself, dates and sources that make the answer trustworthy. The table below shows how a hypothetical accountant in Bristol might map questions to pages; the questions come from what clients ask on the phone, not from a keyword tool alone.
| Customer question | Page that should answer it | What the opening must contain |
|---|---|---|
| Do I need an accountant as a sole trader? | Sole trader accounts service page | Who needs one, what the service includes, the area served |
| How much does a self assessment return cost? | Pricing page | Your own fee range and what changes it |
| When is the self assessment deadline? | Deadlines guide | The dates, with a link to the official source |
| Which accountant in Bristol handles landlords? | Landlord accounts page | The firm's name, the town and the specialism in one sentence |
Evidence is what turns a clear answer into a citable one. Link to the regulator or official page behind a rule, date anything that changes, and say who wrote or checked the page when expertise matters. OpenAI's help page warns users that search results and citations can be incomplete or outdated and advises them to check publication dates, so a page that shows when it was last reviewed gives both the reader and the engine a reason to trust it.
Why does your business need to be named on other websites?
ChatGPT answers many questions, especially "which business should I use", from what other websites say. Your own page cannot be the only source that recommends you.
Ask ChatGPT for the best wedding florist in Bath, with search on, and open the Sources panel. In owners' own tests the links are usually directories, local guides, comparison articles and review platforms, because a business's own claim to be the best is weak evidence on its own. A business that appears on several of those pages, with the same name, place and specialism each time, gives the model consistent material to repeat.
The work is ordinary reputation building aimed at the pages ChatGPT actually reads. Note which websites it cites for your main questions, then ask whether you are listed on each one, and if not, whether you can be: a directory entry, a trade body listing, a local press comment or a place on a curated list. The AI Visibility Score in our checker gives 25% of its weight to how often the business is named on other websites, found with a web search, because this part cannot be fixed on your own pages.
Consistency matters as much as volume. If one directory has an old phone number and another an old address, the model may repeat either, so update every listing on the same day you change a detail. Avoid planted recommendations, which put at risk the trust you are trying to build.
How do you know whether ChatGPT cites your website?
Check in two ways: ask ChatGPT your customers' questions with search on and record the cited sources, and count visits tagged utm_source=chatgpt.com in your analytics.
The question panel is the direct measure. Choose 10 to 20 questions your customers really ask, run each one in ChatGPT with search switched on (from the tools menu or by typing a slash in the message box), and record which websites are cited in the answer. Note that OpenAI's help page says the Sources panel shows cited sources and other relevant links, so a website listed there was not always used in the reply; the inline citations are the stronger signal.
Referral visits are the second measure. OpenAI's publisher FAQ says ChatGPT automatically adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral URLs, so in Google Analytics 4 those visits show up under that session source. The number is a floor rather than a total, because many people read an answer, remember the name and search for the business later, which shows up as a direct or branded search visit instead.
Answers vary between runs, users and days, so read the pattern over months. Keep the same questions and compare the share of answers that cite you with the share that cite named competitors. When a competitor is cited and you are not, open their page next to yours: the difference is usually a clearer first answer, a more specific fact or a listing on a website ChatGPT trusts.
Questions business owners ask about ChatGPT citations
Can I pay OpenAI to have my website cited?
No, citations are not for sale. OpenAI's help page says ChatGPT ranks search results using multiple factors and that placement is not guaranteed. Ads in ChatGPT are a separate paid product, checked by OAI-AdsBot, and an ad is a placement rather than a cited source.
How long after fixing robots.txt will ChatGPT cite me?
OpenAI says a robots.txt change can take about 24 hours to affect search results. That only reopens the door, though: whether your pages are then cited depends on being found and on how clearly they answer, which owners usually see change over weeks rather than days.
Why does ChatGPT show my link but no summary of my page?
That usually means OAI-SearchBot is blocked. OpenAI says sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot can still appear as navigational links, with just the link and title, because ChatGPT found the address elsewhere. Allow the bot if you want your content summarised and cited.
Does blocking GPTBot stop ChatGPT citing my website?
No. GPTBot only signals that your content should not be used to train OpenAI's models, and OpenAI treats each robots.txt setting independently. As long as OAI-SearchBot stays allowed, your pages remain eligible for ChatGPT search answers.
Do I need llms.txt or special schema to be cited by ChatGPT?
OpenAI's crawler documentation and search help page do not mention either file as a condition. Clear, crawlable pages and an allowed OAI-SearchBot are what OpenAI documents. Structured data still helps state your business details unambiguously, but treat it as support, not a switch.
Your first month of work toward ChatGPT citations
Spend the first week on access and the rest of the month on pages, mentions and a baseline you can compare against.
In week one, run the checker, read robots.txt line by line and confirm that OAI-SearchBot receives a normal homepage, then check every CDN, firewall and security plugin setting that mentions bots or AI. In week two, write down your 10 to 20 customer questions, run them in ChatGPT with search on and record the cited sources, and set up a report in Google Analytics 4 for utm_source=chatgpt.com. That record is your baseline, and without it there is no way to tell later whether the work helped.
In weeks three and four, rewrite the opening of your five most important pages so each answers one question in its first lines, with your own figures, dates and sources, and use the method page to see how each area of the AI Citation Score is judged. Then work through the websites ChatGPT cited for your questions and get listed on the ones that fit your business. Repeat the question panel and the scan every month, fix the weakest page each time, and judge progress over a quarter rather than a week.
