We see adults and teenagers aged 12 and over; for younger children we suggest a specialist children's hearing service. A hearing test is not a medical diagnosis, and if your results point to a medical cause we write to your doctor or advise you to see one.

What happens in a hearing test

About forty five minutes in a comfortable chair, with nothing that hurts. A family member is welcome to sit in.

  1. A few questions

When you notice difficulty, any ringing in the ears, past ear infections, noise at work and the medicines you take.

  2. A look in the ears

We check each ear canal and eardrum with a lighted scope and show you the picture on a screen.

  3. Tones and words

In a quiet booth you press a button for each faint beep, then repeat words played with and without background chatter.

  4. Results explained

We go through the chart together, say what it means for daily life and set out the options, including waiting.

Hearing aids chosen with you, not for you

If a hearing aid would help, we show you the main styles, from small aids that sit behind the ear to models that fit inside it, and explain what each does well. You listen with a sample in the room before deciding, and every option is priced in writing.

New aids come with a 45 day trial. If they are not right for you, return them within that time and we refund the price apart from a $150 fitting fee. Visits for fine tuning are included for the first year.

Signs it may be time for a test

Hearing usually changes slowly, so family and friends often notice first. Any of these is a good reason to book.

  • Turning the television up
  • Asking people to repeat themselves
  • Struggling in busy restaurants
  • Missing the doorbell
  • Ringing or buzzing in the ears
  • Tired after long conversations
  • Hearing better on one side
  • Muffled sound after a cold

Sudden hearing loss in one or both ears is different and needs a doctor the same day. If it comes with weakness, a drooping face or slurred speech, call your local emergency number.

Common questions about hearing

Does a hearing test hurt?

No. You listen to beeps and words through headphones and press a button when you hear them. The look inside the ear uses a small light and takes a few seconds.

Should ear wax be cleared with cotton buds?

Please avoid them. Cotton buds tend to push wax deeper and can scratch the ear canal. If an ear feels blocked, book a removal appointment or ask a doctor or pharmacist for advice.

Will a hearing aid bring back normal hearing?

Hearing aids help many people follow conversation more easily, but they do not return hearing to how it was. We explain what to expect from your own results before you decide anything.

Is there help for ringing in the ears?

We can test your hearing, talk through what may be making tinnitus worse and suggest ways to manage it, including sound features built into some aids. There is no promise of a cure, and we refer you to a doctor if anything needs checking.

Who carries out the tests?

Our audiologists and hearing aid dispensers are trained and registered as the law here requires. Titles and rules for hearing care differ widely between countries, so ask about qualifications wherever you go.

What counts as urgent?

Hearing loss that comes on suddenly, over hours or a few days, needs a doctor the same day. Severe ear pain with fever or discharge also needs medical care. For any emergency, call your local emergency number.

About this sample page

A hearing test page that answers in writing

Clear Tone Hearing Centre is fictional, and its one page site shows how an audiologist can present tests, hearing aids and ear wax removal on AI Web Maker. A sound bar card in the opening view hints at the test tones before a word is read. Services follow with prices, then a four step test walkthrough and a section on choosing hearing aids with a 45 day trial. A short row of everyday signs helps relatives recognise changes, while a clear line sends sudden hearing loss to a doctor. The request form at the end lets clients pick text or email over a call, which suits the people this centre serves.

A hearing professional can start a similar site by describing the centre in a few lines, and the builder turns that into draft sections to edit. Requests then arrive with a day and a part of the day, and the centre accepts, moves or declines each one. Fees remain a matter between the centre and its clients, and the platform takes nothing from them. Hosting starts when the site goes public, at $119 for the year, with the domain added separately. Open the linked sample page to see each band explained in turn.
